About Author

Anna Bezrodnaya was born in the city of Riga, Latvia.

All her life she worked at one of the oldest factories in Latvia - «Rigas Modes». Being a modest person, she devoted her life to work, her son and favorite hobby - thread painting. Her hobby took all her spare time, because a single picture could require months and even years.

She did not sell her works embroidering for herself. That is why, when Anna Bezrodnaya passed away and her collection saved by a miracle and numbering more than 50 canvases was exhibited, many people were shocked, that a modest woman lived so quietly and never promoted her talent.

       Thread painting from Anna Bezrodnaya

We are glad to present here the unique works of unknown, unfortunately already gone artist Anna Bezrodnaya.

The history of thread painting, a type of handwork, throws back to Prehistoric Times. Even nowadays, the thread painting is popular among million of women. In most cases it is just another hobby helping to relax and get away from daily routine and commonly will not bring to glory.

Our story starts with 1960s-1980s, when in a small Riga apartment on the skirts of the city there lived an ordinary woman. She, like many other women, worked at a factory and getting back home did a million of household chores and things. All of her spare time she spent for the hobby - hread painting. Could she have even imagined that she would create masterpieces to be admired by million people? We doubt it. She just did what brought her happiness, satisfaction and calmness and always immersed her into a fantasy world. But it wasn’t just an ordinary thread painting. Anna embroidered in silk with the machine. This hobby was likely to be connected with her job in the first place - she worked at the factory «Rigas Modes». That’s why Anna had an opportunity to get such a diverse color palette of the thread, which was hard to find that time. If you look close at these small stitches the sky and clouds are embroidered with, you can see dozens of one color tone variety. If you look close at the autumn tree leaves and forest stream water, you will be able to recognize thousands of color tones. Such an activity is laborious enough for a single 40x60 cm canvas to require the whole year. Anna’s collection numbers more than 50 thread paintings.

Thread painting started with small sky background stitches, and then there were clouds, and finally trees, field and meadow silhouettes. Wonderfully colorful flowers bloomed at her canvases. Floss of different color tones created unique combination and tinges. The artist’s workmanship is possible to be seen in the winter scenery harmonizing various white color tones. Her sceneries are 100% reproduction of famous Russian artist works of the late 19th century - Kuinji, Shishkin and Levitan. It is unknown, whether Anna Bezrodnaya was art educated, but art critics note that the artist was able to make perspective drawing. All the thread paintings seem volume.

The key moment of the pictures is not that they were so hard to create, but the way you look at the picture and understand that you got wrapped up into the blue sky, listen to the voice of the stream, feel the scent of the flowers and get the real pleasure of what you see.
